Slovenia is a very traditional country. For a long time, many festivals and celebrations have marked the life of its inhabitants.

  • January 1 and 2: New Year’s Day
  • February 8: Prešeren Day
  • April 4 and 5: Easter Sunday and Easter Monday
  • April 27: Resistance Day
  • May 1 and 2: Labour Day
  • June 25: National Day
  • August 15: Assumption of Mary
  • October 31: Reformation Day
  • November 1: All Saints’ Day

  • December 26: Independence and Unity Day

Calendar of major events

February

  • Kurentovanje in Ptuj:  The country’s most popular carnival celebrating the arrival of spring, thanks to the masked figure of the Kurent who are supposed to chase away the demons of winter. The carnival features a number of parades, the carnival promenade, presentations of traditional costumes and concerts.
  • Laufarija: An ancestral carnival that takes place in Cerkno on the Sunday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

June

  • Festival Lent: Two weeks of cultural and festive events in the old town of Maribor.

July

  • Bled Festival: Two weeks of concerts around the lake of Bled.
  • Ljubljana Festival: concerts, dance and theatre performance).

August

  • Festival of Radovljica: A festival of ancient music of international renown.

September

  • Red Bull 400 in Planica: A 400-meter race to climb one of the highest ski-jumping hills.
  • Desert Festival – Sweet Istria, in Koper.

December

  • Various Christmas markets take place in Slovenian cities. We particularly recommend the Christmas market of Ljubljana, the most popular of the country.
