A central gastronomic event in Slovenia

The European Food Summit was held this weekend in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from November 6 to 8. As many as 24 outstanding representatives of foreign media and influencers in the field of food and sustainability from 14 countries attended the event.

Supported by the Slovenian Tourist Board, this international summit is one of the most important in Europe in the field of nutrition and cooking. This initiative aims to co-create a sustainable future for European food and gastronomy and to raise awareness about the importance of more responsible production and consumption, in particular, to support local farmers and to decrease the amount of discarded food.

The summit, which took place in parallel with the Gourmet Ljubljana festival, was marked by several highlights such as culinary walks, exceptional dinners, and above all a conference of experts for the public. The symposium included a round table discussion moderated by Ana Roš, one of the world’s best chefs, and attended by such distinguished guests as the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Food Jože Podgoršek. They discussed traditions and innovation, the future of nutrition and gastronomy, and the creation of sustainable and socially responsible businesses. Their ambition is to inspire and encourage progressive thinking and action for a better and sustainable future, and to spread this message far beyond the Slovenian borders.

Slovenia, leader of sustainable culinary tourism

In terms of tourism, it is also an opportunity for Slovenia to show the world its rich culinary and cultural heritage and to highlight its local know-how. Barbara Zmrzlikar, Head of Research, Development, Innovation and European Projects Department at the Slovenian Tourist Board, emphasized that such events are crucial, also for Slovenia’s visibility: With such events, Slovenia proves that it can dictate the direction of development also in such challenging areas as the area of global impacts of food on our common future. Gastronomy is one of the key elements of Slovenia’s tourist offer and has made a remarkable breakthrough in recent years. Thanks to a systematic and goal-oriented approach to the development and promotion of sustainable gastronomy, Slovenia is becoming one of the most attractive gastronomic destinations in the world.”

Slovenia is becoming an increasingly visible destination for exceptional gastronomic experiences with its diversity of flavors and high-quality products. Last year, the Tourist Board included gastronomy in the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, allowing various suppliers and restaurants to obtain the “Slovenia Green Cuisine” label, and this year Slovenia holds the prestigious title of European Gastronomy Region. Hosting the European Food Summit is another step towards de-seasonalization and diversification of tourist flows, which is part of a more sustainable and responsible global vision of tourism.
